AWS Well-Architected Framework is designed to provide high-level best practices and guidance to optimize the way your organization builds and maintains your applications in the AWS cloud.
It is based on five pillars of success which provide a consistent method for evaluating and remediating systems and ensuring you are getting the most from your AWS cloud environment.
Run and monitor systems efficiently.
Continually improve supporting processes and procedures.
Protect information, systems, assets.
Apply risk assessments and mitigation strategies.
Automate recovery from infrastructure/service failures.
Add computing resources on demand.
Quickly mitigate disruptions, e.g., misconfigurations or transient network issues.
Use resources efficiently to meet system requirements.
Maintain efficiency as demand changes and technologies evolve.
Avoid unnecessary costs.
Eliminate suboptimal resources.
The review is an important checkup on your AWS cloud environment that can deliver a number of important advantages:
The Well-Architected Review will surface new ideas for how your AWS cloud environment can create new opportunities for the business, e.g., new forms of customer engagement, faster product cycle time, increased workflow efficiency, and more.
Apexon is an accredited AWS Well-Architected Partner. We have developed a proven 10-step process for conducting effective Well-Architected Reviews with AWS customers.
We utilize the framework and tools to deliver a comprehensive review of an individual workload—defined as a set of machines, instances, or servers that together enabled the delivery of a service to internal/external users, e.g., business application, e-commerce website, or web application.
The result of this review is a detailed analysis of the workload performance measured against the five pillars of success outlined above: Operational Excellence, Security, Reliability, Performance Efficiency, and Cost Optimization. It will also provide a mitigation plan for areas that do not meet Framework recommendations.
Step 1
Stakeholder Interviews to understand business requirements
Step 2
Self-Assessment using AWS architectural tool to gather all relevant information
Step 3
Architectural Review to understand environment and dependencies
Step 4
WAR Pillar Prioritization to focus resources where needed
Step 5
Current Workload State Assessment to understand requirements
Step 6
Standards Review to ensure guidelines are being met
Step 7
Risk Identification to assess potential impact on the business
Step 8
Architectural Tool Notes to inventory services used
Step 9
Due Diligence leveraging AWS tools, e.g., nOps, CloudConformity
Step 10
Statement of Work (SOW) with Short (0-1 month), Medium (1-3 months), and Long-Term (3-6 months) improvement plans / deliverables
The total time required for the Well-Architected Review can vary from workload to workload, but average time from start to completion as outlined above is five (5) days.
